Bill de Blasio was born on May 8, 1961 in New York City. de Blasio received a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in metropolitan studies and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affaris. In 1981, he was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar.

In 1984, de Blasio worked for the Urban Fellows Program at the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice.  In 1987, he was hired to work as a political organizer in Maryland after graduating from graduate school at Columbia. In 1988, he traveled to Nicaragua for 10 days with the Quixote Center to help distribute food and medicine during the Nicaraguan Revolution. In 1989, de Blasio began working as a volunteer coordinator for David Dinkins' mayoral campaign. After, he was an aide in City Hall. In 1994, he worked as the campaign manager for Charles Rangel's successful reelection bid to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1997, he worked in the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and in 1999, he became a New York School Board Member.

In 2000, he worked as campaign manager for Hillary Clinton's successful United States Senate campaign. He was then elected to the New York City Council in 2002 and as Public Advocate of 2009. In 2013, he was elected Mayor of New York City. He then unsuccessfully ran for President, announcing his candidacy in May 2019 and suspending his campaign in September 2019.
